The Setup

One of the world's best surf destinations

The Mentawai Islands are long established as one of the world’s finest surfing destinations, and Villa Onu sits right in the middle of it all, fronting HT’s with Lance’s Left just around the corner.

The islands are home to some of the most consistent swell on the planet, with waves for everyone: mellow peaks perfect for longboards and fun boards, right through to heaving slabs best left to the pros.

The Waves

Get to know some of the breaks a short walk or boat ride from Villa Onu. There are two dozen more across the islands.

Lances Right (HT's)

The jewel out front. One of the most consistent right-handers in the world and rated among the best waves anywhere, straight off our beach. The main break flows into the inside section, viewable from your bed.

Lance's Left

A long left reef-point offering everything from powerful, open walls to ledgey barrel sections, a short boat ride from the villa.

Cobra

A shallow, technical, barreling left slab 100m up the reef from Lance's Left, a wedgey take-off into multiple barrel sections.

Mini HT's

A small left and right peak that stands up quickly then peels gently into deep water, far more relaxed than its big brother and a favourite for beginner lessons.

Bintang

A short, slabby right that can serve up a very exciting barrel; waves seem to appear out of nowhere and suck below sea level. Best at 3–4ft.

The Point

A long, high-quality right-hand reef-point, an easy take-off into a rippable wall with the occasional barrel, and usually far quieter than HT's.

On request, our team runs full-day surf trips tailored to you and the crew, exploring the other waves the Mentawai has to offer. The speedboat leaves before dawn, stocked with food and drinks, so you’re first on it when the swell lines up.
