When Should You Surf Mentawai

May – September

High Season

Intermediate – Advanced

Medium crowds

Back-to-back swells roll up from the South-East and south-central Indian Ocean, and mid-June through early August delivers overhead to double-overhead days. Winds stay weak and variable, so mornings are frequently glassy. This is the Mentawai at full song.

Shoulder Season

Medium crowds

Smaller than peak, but still consistently overhead and perfect for progression. From October the swell trends down into November, yet it’s rare for the surf to drop below head-high for more than a few days. March–April reverses the trend as the Indian Ocean comes alive again.

Waist-to-head-high days with the occasional overhead session, and remarkably consistent for the size. Light crowds, warm water and mellow reefs make it the friendliest window for beginners and longboarders, with enough on tap to keep everyone happy.

Wind & Swell

Why it's so clean

The Mentawai sits in the path of long-range groundswell from deep in the Indian Ocean, yet is sheltered enough that the wind rarely ruins it. Through high season the swell arrives from the south-west, with weak, highly variable winds leaving mornings glassy. In shoulder and low season, lighter N–NW winds take over and can shift direction within hours, so there’s almost always a bank or reef facing the right way.

The heart of high season: overhead to double-overhead, glassy mornings and the region’s heaviest, most perfect barrels. Best for confident intermediate to advanced surfers.

Best all-rounder

April – May & Sep – Oct

Consistent overhead waves, lighter crowds and a good chance of scoring, without the peak-season intensity. The sweet spot for most surfers and mixed-ability crews.

Learning & families

November – February

Mellow, forgiving waves, the quietest line-ups and warm, easy conditions, ideal for beginners, longboarders and families, with the odd overhead day for the more advanced.
