Discover the Mentawai Islands
A remote Indonesian archipelago of tropical islands, rich culture, untouched nature and some of the world’s most celebrated waves.

The Destination
One of the last great frontiers
The Mentawai Islands lie roughly 150km off the coast of West Sumatra — a remote archipelago of jungle, reef and some of the most consistent waves on the planet. Four main islands make up the chain: Siberut, Sipora, and North & South Pagai.
Beyond the surf, the islands are home to the indigenous Mentawai people, dense rainforest, endemic wildlife and a slow, unhurried rhythm that stays with you long after you leave. Villa Onu sits on Sipora, at the heart of it all.
Where We Are
South Sipora, our island home
Sipora is the smallest and most central of the four main Mentawai islands — and its southern tip is where Villa Onu lives, beachfront in the village of Katiet, in the district of Bosua.
It’s a rare address. Step off the sand and you’re in front of Lances Right; step back from the beach and you’re among coconut groves, fishing hamlets and jungle that has barely changed in generations. There are no resorts stacked along the shore here, no traffic, no crowds — just a handful of villages, warm water, and world-class reef in every direction.

The People
Authentic Mentawai culture & community
The Mentawai are one of Indonesia’s oldest indigenous cultures, with a way of life rooted in the forest, the sea and a deep respect for the natural world. Staying in Katiet places you gently among that living culture — not as a spectacle, but as a neighbour.

Surf & Soul
World-class waves, genuine immersion
Most travellers come to the Mentawai for the surf — and leave talking about everything else. At Villa Onu you don’t have to choose between the two.
Score perfect reef passes in the morning, then spend the afternoon walking the village, fishing with a local captain, or simply watching island life unfold from the deck. It’s the combination that makes South Sipora rare: the comfort and privacy of a luxury villa, wrapped inside one of the most remote and culturally intact corners of Indonesia.
Getting Here & Around
Getting to the Mentawai Islands
Remote, but well within reach. Almost everyone begins in Padang, on the West Sumatra mainland, then crosses to Sipora by fast ferry — or, for the adventurous, by a short island flight.
